Post-operative Instructions (Following Extractions)

The following information will help prevent bleeding and soreness.

  • Do not rinse until next morning to avoid disturbing the blood clot. Should bleeding occur, carefully place a clean cotton bandage or handkerchief over the wound and apply gentle, yet firm, pressure for 5 - 10 minutes.
  •  Avoid strenuous exercise for 12 hours as this will increase your blood pressure and hence increase the chances of bleeding from the wound.
  • Avoid hot fluids and hard chewy foods. Cool drinks and soft food will prevent injury to the wound. Also avoid smoking and alcohol for 6 hours as these affect the healing process.

After 24 Hours

  • Bathe the area with hot salt water 3 to 4 times a day. Hold this over the area for one minute, discard and repeat. The solution is made by dissolving 1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of water as hot as is comfortable.

Post-operative Pain

  • It is common to experience pain after the anaesthetic has worn off. This can be kept to a minimum by taking painkillers e.g. paracetamol or Neurofen, before the numbness has worn off.
  • Your dentist may find it necessary to prescribe antibiotics or stronger painkillers. If so, take them as directed and complete the course. An antibacterial mouthwash may also be recommended. Again, use as directed - usually 10mls held over the site twice a day for 1 minute.

If you continue to experience severe pain or swelling then an infection may be present. Please contact our reception team to arrange a further appointment.
